Your name or any nicknames you have?

Charlie Roberts, have been called Charles, Chuck, and Char Char quite a bit over the years.

Where are you at in the world? Where will you be fishing this year?

Maumelle, Arkansas, a throbbing metropolis northwest of Little Rock.  I’ve been on the Roaring Fork, Colorado and Yampa Rivers in Colorado, and the White and Norfork Rivers in Arkansas this year.

What river(s) and lake(s) do you guide/fish?

Due to its proximity I have logged the most hours on Lake Maumelle but I like to consider the White and Norfork Rivers as my home waters and I am currently on the hunt for a second home in that area.

How long have you been guiding/fly fishing?

I have been fly fishing for a scant 4 years and fishing in general for 35 years.

What got you into fly fishing? When did you start?

I purchased a fly rod as a joint adventure with my good friend Keegen Knapp, after cleaning house all all the local Blue Gill, Bass, and Long Ear Sun Perch in our home town we booked a trip with Matthew Millner of Rising River Guides, that trip resulted in Matthew Millner becoming one of my most cherished friends and my fly fishing mentor.  I followed him out to Yampa Colorado where I attended guide school under him, Tim Drummond, and Ryan Herbert of Yampa Valley Anglers.

Why do you fly fish?  What does it “do” for you?

I fly fish because I am absolutely addicted to the places it takes me and the water and people it puts me in touch with.  Although I absolutely love the visible take of a streamer on the crystal clear white river, I think the continual demand for patience from me and the resulting moments of me stopping and just taking it all in is what does it for me.

If you own and use a Rod Vault, what do you like about you Rod Vault?

I own two Rod Vaults!  My Clackacraft Drift boat has 6 rod slots and I love that we can dump all the rods from boat into the two vaults at the end of the day and slip away from the take out like complete pro’s (total illusion of course).

What is a piece of advice you want to give to other anglers or a tip/trick that has helped you grow as an angler?

Be patient and open your eyes to the world Fly Fishing is exposing you to, learn to appreciate and respect the environment, become aware of the impacts you and others have on the environment and seek out ways to preserve it.

Who has influenced you most as an angler?

Matthew Millner, I have fly fished with him more than any other person, the patience, etiquette, and guide skills he has passed onto me have and will continue to shape who I am as a person and guide.

What’s your favorite new piece of gear?

Sawyer Square Top DyneLite Oars with Shoal Cut Blades, I purchased these not long after getting a Clackacraft Eddy and they are quite nice compared to some other oars I have spent time on.
