Your name or any nicknames you have?
Cyndie / Cyndie Lou
Where are you at in the world? Where will you be fishing this year?
It’s a new decade and I have somewhat re-invented myself for the next half of my life. Doing what I love and introducing other women to the fun of fly fishing , whether it is western or Tenkara . Big plans for travel ! I will be going to Mongolia to catch Teimen on a fly rod and then on to the eagle festival!
What river(s) and lake(s) do you guide/fish?
I love to fly fish on any of the high mountain lakes in my area! I am surrounded by 5 wilderness areas and a 30 minute drive to Rocky Mountain National Park …lots to choose from if you’re willing to hike to them ! Favorite personal river to fly fish is the South Fork of the Snake in Idaho, but at home on the Colorado and the Fraser rivers. For guiding, I have private access on Ranch Creek, the Colorado (based on availability) , and some private ponds and a smaller creek for Tenkara.
How long have you been guiding/fly fishing?
I’ve been fly fishing since my teen years . I started guiding 3 years ago … persuaded by my gal friends … they know I’m obsessed.
What got you into fly fishing? When did you start?
I have my dad to blame for my habit ! Much thanks to him (he’s now 88) I was introduced to the river and to lakes at a very early age, from there we took backpack trips every year, sometimes twice, into lakes and rivers and would spend 3-7 days fly fishing . I love the solitude … the great outdoors
Why do you fly fish? What does it “do” for you?
Lol !! I’m obsessed ?? It is FUN ! I love to be outside in the wilderness… fly fishing gets you away .. it brings a peacefulness to my soul when I’m standing in a river or I have backpacked into a lake . It is WHO I am … it is what keeps me centered and knowing what is important in life.
As a woman guide/angler, you’re definitely in the minority. What made you decide to be a guide/angler?
I was encouraged by this great group of women that I hike with . Trying to figure out what I wanted to be , they encouraged me to now do something I would really like and enjoy .
Has the fact you’re a female ever been an issue with a client or other angler (such as them hitting on you or maybe talking down to you?) If so how did you manage it/them?
Haven’t had any issues and don’t expect to . If they found me via internet they know what to expect.
Do you think being a woman gives you a different perspective as an angler/guide? If so, how?
I think as a woman it is easier to get people to relax when they are beginners. No Macho here… I’m all about the fun ..don’t over think things .. have fun … relax … it’s a lifetime sport and a life time of learning ..
What is a piece of advice you want to give to other anglers or a tip/trick that has helped you grow as an angler?
Wow … I think the hardest part of fly fishing is the etymology … learn to recognize bugs .. hatches … Remember .. you’re always learning ..
What’s your favorite new piece of gear?
My beautiful Tenkara fly box !
What is your favorite fly? (To tie, or catch fish on?)
I love to tie the Tenkara flies … they are fast and fun to tie. My favorite “take” is on a mouse or large terrestrial ! Oh my … and nothing better than catching big fish on a tiny blue winged olive !
Best catch of all time?
As of right now I would have to say the most nerve racking one was a tarpon last spring ! The tarpon came out of the water twice, the whole body and wiggling and it was as big as me and then snapped off … scared me to death !! really exciting to have on ..that’s a whole other technique and longer distance casting
What’s your “Dream Trip”?
What are some of the best places you’ve been fishing?
Love the wind River Range in Wyo for some great lake fly fishing . Alaska is awesome for rivers and remote . But looking forward to discovering more !
