Kennedy Song or Ken
Where are you at in the world? Where will you be fishing this year?
I live in Milwaukee Wisconsin, I will be fishing pretty much everywhere, but mostly in Wisconsin. if I do get out of the state and I often do every year I fish south Carolina and sometimes get into the Smoky Mountains.
What river(s) and lake(s) do you guide/fish?
I mainly fish lake Michigan tributes and once in a while I get out to devils lake for their big blue gills. another lake that is my favorite for small mouth and large mouth bass is lake Delavan. during the summer I’m mostly a trout bum so you will probably find me on a Wisconsin trout stream or in the driftless area in Vernon and Viroqua.
How long have you been guiding/fly fishing?
I have been fly fishing for 3 yrs and can’t seem to get enough of it.
I watched my older brother practice fly casting in the yard for countless hours. one day my brother left his fly rod at my mom’s house, well that day my son wanted to go fishing so I took my brothers rod out, went to a local river by my house, (and at that time the chinook salmon was spawning) so I spent 45 min trying to put the rod together and threading the line through the guides. finally I stepped into the river and saw a couple salmon moving up river, decided I try my luck and with luck on my side I was hooked into a 15lbs chinook salmon that ran me down to the backing, after landing my first chinook salmon I was pretty excited so the next one I handed it over to my 3yr old son and right there and then we was hooked right along with me. This happened back in September of 2014, from there my fly fishing addiction grew. I went form 1 cheap scientific angler fly rod to (now loving this rod and reel set) Orvis Helios 2 paired with a hardy Fortuna x1 reel.
Fly fishing easies my mind, it puts me into a trance of peace and quite. I saw this video called Testify by Aaron Peterson who was a photographer, in one part of the video he says , ” I fish because only in the woods can I find solitude without loneliness.” This little part says it all about fishing and what it does not only to me but to every angler out there. But for me its watching my stress wash away in the river so I can go home feeling refreshed.
What is a piece of advice you want to give to other anglers or a tip/trick that has helped you grow as an angler?
My tip would be never give up on the sport of fishing whether its fly fishing or gear fishing, keep going, keep trying. Especially with fly fishing, just learning how to cast the fly rod and trying to master it, and when you think you have it, a new technique comes along and you want to learn that technique too. fishing is a sport about patience. If you fail try again, keeping going until you catch that fish or until you’ve mastered that technique. never give up.
My new favorite piece of gear would be the Orvis camo sling pack I got for Christmas from my wife. The Sling pack fits perfect and is super comfortable on your back, I just love it.
What is your favorite fly? (To tie, or catch fish on?)
My favorite fly would be the woolly bugger, there are so many variations to tying the woolly bugger. It imitates so many variety of bait fish and bugs that live in the water.
Best catch of all time?
My best catch of all time would be the last salmon run in the fall when I took my son out. we hooked into a 15lbs chinook on a 4wt glass rod and I gave us a run for our money. just the smile on his face and how excited he was after the release is priceless.
What’s your “Dream Trip”?
My dream trip would be fishing for wild steelhead and bull trout in British Columbia or Taiman in Mongolia, and golden dorado in the amazon.
One of my favorite is the Great Smokey Mountains, one of the best place for wild brook trout, rainbow trout. Colorado’s blue river for cut throat, cut bow, and browns.
