Your name or any nicknames you have?

Kinsey Ann Durham

Where are you at in the world? Where will you be fishing this year?

Denver, Colorado. I will be fishing all over Colorado and other parts of the states and world!

What river(s) and lake(s) do you guide/fish?

I fish mostly in Colorado. Some of my favorite rivers are The Colorado, The Eagle, and The San Juan.

How long have you been guiding/fly fishing?

Almost a year. I am new to it, but have been going non-stop since I have started. I absolutely love it!

What got you into fly fishing? When did you start?

I wanted to find something that I was truly passionate about in the outdoors. I, also, wanted to keep up with some of the men in my family. I decided I wanted to try fly fishing. I enrolled in classes at the Denver Fly Shop where I learned to cast, tie knots, and about bugs. I have been going non-stop ever since!

Why do you fly fish?  What does it “do” for you?

Fly fishing is meditative, stress-relieving and I am 100% present when I am doing it.  love just concentrating on that bobber and waiting for it to dip! I really enjoy the challenge of fly fishing, the beautiful places it has taken me, and the awesome people I have met while doing it. I love that I can do it with my dog, my dad and my sister, too! Fly fishing has truly become one of my greatest passions. I have, also, become more aware of environmental issues that these fish are facing and I want to get involved in preserving their habitats and helping combat these issues.

What is a piece of advice you want to give to other anglers or a tip/trick that has helped you grow as an angler?

Go out and do it as much as you can and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Fly fishing is super hard. Also, have fun with it! I see a lot of people get really frustrated when they aren’t catching fish or having a good day on the river. Try and enjoy every minute of it! Fly fishing wouldn’t be as rewarding if you didn’t have days where you were getting skunked!

What’s your favorite new piece of gear?

My purple Rising Net. It is so beautiful and has my name engraved on it. Rarely do I feel that a piece of fishing equipment matches my personality, but this one definitely does.

What is your favorite fly? (To tie, or catch fish on?)

I can only tie basic flies, but my favorite fly to tie is a purple squirmy wormy. My favorite fly that I have fished was this awesome Cicadia pattern in New Zealand, but I ended up getting it stuck in a tree. It was a funny scene of three of us girls (my guide and my friend that I was fishing with in New Zealand) trying to get that Cicadia out of the tree, because that was the only one we had.

Best catch of all time?

A huge 25+ inch brown trout on the Owen River in New Zealand. It was the one of the greatest moments of my life!

What’s your “Dream Trip”?

Salt water fly fishing for huge parrot fish and GT on the island of Seychelles or heli-fishing in British Colombia.

What are some of the best places you’ve been fishing?

The South Island of New Zealand, Ascension Bay in Mexico, the Cayman Islands
