Your name or any nicknames you have?

I’ve had a few nicknames but the most common one is T-John

Where are you at in the world? Where will you be fishing this year?

I currently live in Denver and mainly fish in and around the mountains. But I will be taking a trip to Wyoming and Montana in August for a week of fly fishing!

What river(s) and lake(s) do you guide/fish?

I fish all over the state but spend most of my time on the south Platte (deckers, chessman, and the dream stream) I also guide those waters. But recently have been venturing to Glenwood Springs often to fish the frying pan, roaring fork, the eagle, and hikes to alpine lakes and streams in search of cutthroats and brook trout.

How long have you been guiding/fly fishing?

I have been fishing most of my life but got into fly fishing about 6 years ago while working as a fish biologist back east. I have been guiding for about a year now.

What got you into fly fishing? When did you start?

While working as a fish biologist, another coworker was big into fly fishing and took me out one day. I was hooked (no pun intended) immediately! This was about 6 years ago and don’t think I’ve picked up a spinning rod or bait caster in the past 4.

Why do you fly fish?  What does it “do” for you?

I fish for my love of the water and being around it. It also calms me down and gets me in touch with nature when I’m feeling the pressures of the city. Serenity and the peacefulness are the best attributes.

If you own and use a Rod Vault, what do you like about you Rod Vault?

I do not own one yet but will be making a purchase very soon! I’ve been hearing great things.

What is a piece of advice you want to give to other anglers or a tip/trick that has helped you grow as an angler?

So many things could be said here but my latest tip is tungsten putty. Weight is the single biggest game changer I’ve had in the past year or so.

Who has influenced you most as an angler?

I’d have to say everyone I have met since moving to Colorado. I’ve met some great people out on the water and in fly shops that are always helpful and giving advice on new techniques and spots to hit up.

What’s your favorite new piece of gear?

Just recently switched from a hip pack to a Simms sling and it has made a world of difference.

What is your favorite fly? (To tie, or catch fish on?)

Favorite fly has got to be the mercury baetis or a no flash, no bead pheasant tail. South Platte crushers

Best catch of all time?

A recent trip with Luke from 5280 Angler on Long Meadow Ranch landed me a 28″ rainbow!!!

What’s your “Dream Trip”?

New Zealand for monster browns or Cuba for the elusive permit.

What are some of the best places you’ve been fishing?

I love Colorado with a passion and my home state of Ohio – but Montana has got to be the most beautiful and un-pressured fishing I’ve done.

How do people follow you on social media or reach you?
